Release of grebes from Wharf Landing 2. | |
Here we have the second of the ocean access Public Landings. It too
is available to the public seasonally. The ramp of stairs is raised in winter
months. Although originally intended to be accessible to ships for loading, the
variable surge conditions and the stationary design of the landing makes docking
uncertain. It is very useful for small boats to pick up and drop off passengers.
It also affords an excellent view of the veritable forest of pier pilings that
comprise the Wharf. With about 4500 trees fashioned into pilings, it can be described
as a marine forest. It offers refuge and structure for many reef creatures and
plants. Sea lions, perches, starfish, nudibranchs, sponges and anenomies can be
found swimming or adhering all around the pilings. It also is a popular haul
out spot for sea lions and one can get a close up appreciation of the size of
adult male sea lions as they snooze on the cross beams. The wharf hosts both male
and female young and adult sea lions. One estimate of the pilings is that
if layered end to end, they would reach from here to Monterey to Moss Landing
and back. |
